Wolfsburg have turned to Juventus attacker Simone Zaza after missing out on new Tottenham Hotspur signing Vincent Janssen.
Zaza, 25, currently tops the Bundesliga club's wish list as they seek to reinforce their attack ahead of the 2016-17 season.
The Italy international was linked with Wolfsburg in January, but stayed at Juve, for whom he has only started one league game in 2016.
Zaza has now been singled out as Wolfsburg's priority target after Janssen opted to join Tottenham from AZ Alkmaar, instead of moving to Germany.
"We knew about [the Janssen transfer] for a while," sporting director Klaus Allofs told kicker. "[Zaza] could indeed be an option for us. But we'll see if that's realistic."
Following a disappointing season, Wolfsburg are unable to offer European football to potential reinforcements, and they also have to compete for Zaza's signature with "several English clubs," according to kicker.
The club have in the past been linked with Mario Gomez, who is set to return to Fiorentina after a season-long loan spell with Turkish side Besiktas.
"I don't want to rule out any options," Allofs said when asked about Gomez, adding: "There are no indicators currently what Gomez plans for his future."
Earlier this summer, Wolfsburg appeared to be headed towards a mass exodus of key players, but so far only defender Naldo has left the club, while Andre Schurrle's transfer to Borussia Dortmund appears to be nearing its completion.
But other than that, it has been a fairly quiet summer at the Volkswagen Arena, and following a meeting with agent Roger Wittmann, who represents Julian Draxler, Ricardo Rodriguez, Luiz Gustavo and Vierinha, Allofs hopes that the club will be able to hang on to most of their squad.
Rodriguez and Gustavo's releases clauses in their contracts were not activated last month, meaning any transfer is now negotiable, while Draxler has been linked with a switch to the Premier League.
Although Bild reported on Wednesday that Wolfsburg could be willing to sell Draxler to Arsenal if the Gunners were to bid €60 million, Allofs told reporters he informed Wittmann that "Julian will stay, and we will not allow him a transfer."
Rodriguez could still be set for a move, but Allofs said that Gustavo "has a contract and his agent has anyhow not put in a transfer request."
